A freight train carrying fuel derailed and caught fire Friday near the Arizona-New Mexico border, forcing the closure of an interstate highway that serves as a key trucking route.

As of Saturday morning, the fire was still burning, a New Mexico State Police public information officer told CBS News.

Around 35 wagons carrying “mixed freight” were derailed, authorities said on Saturday. Six of these cars contained propane.

Early passers-by posted videos and photos on social media showing crumpled train cars and black smoke billowing out.

No injuries were reported in the midday train crash near Lupton, Arizona. BNSF Railway spokeswoman Lena Kent said company personnel were on hand to clean up the wreck. Kent said the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

Interstate 40 was closed by authorities in both directions in the area early this afternoon, directing trucks and motorists off the highway onto alternate routes, state police said. New Mexico and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Traffic on I-40 was backed up for more than 10 miles, although detours were opened on two-lane roads and highways, said Kristine Bustos-Mihelcic, a spokeswoman for the New York Department of Transportation.
