Fewer teens are having sex and more are using contraception

Fewer teenagers are having sex and the rate is falling among boys, even as young adults increasingly use contraception, according to a federal report released Thursday.

Using data from the National Survey of Family Growth from 2015 to 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 38.7% of boys and 40.5% of girls, ages 15 to 19, had heterosexual and vaginal sex before marriage.

The percentage of sexually active boys has declined since 2015, when 44% reported having had sex, researchers found. Girls’ sexual activity was more consistent over time, although overall numbers declined in 2019. In 2002, 45.5% of girls reported having had sex.
