FOX ISLAND, NY (CBSNewYork) – There is a mystery on Fox Island in the large south bay of Long Island.
In communities on the south shore of Long Island, the conversation centers on the 4-foot-wide, 2-foot-deep crater created by an illegal explosion on an undeveloped island off Lindenhurst, accessible only by boat.

“I had just got out of the shower and thought something had hit the roof, it was so hard,” Lindenhurst owner James Messina told CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan on Monday.
John Sacchitello was working with wood at the Venetian Shores Pavilion when he said he almost fell off his feet and saw sand rise in the distance. Fox Island is over a mile from the coast.
“It was just a huge boom. My first instinct was that someone’s boat blew up. But the way the smoke cleared so quickly, I thought someone had started something, ”Sacchitello said.
Five hundred calls poured into the Babylonian public security service. The worrying social media posts came from as far away as Huntington, 16 miles away.
“I had no idea what it was. It’s definitely a scary situation because you don’t know what it is, ”said Huntington resident Daniel Rivera.

“Focused on a bunch of pictures taken out of a boat that may have had two, maybe three young people on the boat leaving the scene,” said Rich Schaffer, Babylon supervisor.
The Suffolk County Navy office has kicked in.
“Obviously our department is wondering why someone would detonate a device of this size and magnitude on an uninhabited island,” Acting Suffolk County Police Commissioner Stuart Cameron said.
A 23-foot ship with stripes has been spotted. Were they perhaps duck hunters or fishermen?
“I saw a police boat – a bay police officer – cross the bay and approach a boat,” said Roger Tursi, a resident of Babylon. “I hope they catch it because it’s not good.”

Investigators say it could have been anything from a homemade bomb to dynamite, and do not rule out that it was a possible trial for a future criminal act. They implore the public for tips.
