Everton have ‘no character to get them out of this predicament’ with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal still battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League

Everton’s situation looks extremely grim as they face a mountainous task to secure their Premier League status.

For the first time in more than half a century, the Toffees could be relegated, and fans and former players alike are not confident of their chances of staying on.

Everton have plenty of problems and their form gives little indication they can pull through

The Goodison Park team have been playing top English football for 68 years.

A club that has a proud history and passionate support, it’s remarkable how far they’ve fallen in recent times.

Since February 2016, when Farhad Moshiri became the majority owner, Everton have spent over £500m on transfers, and it hasn’t brought any success.

Their fall is astonishing to say the least, and fans will be furious at what is happening, especially as neighbors Liverpool are flying high and could be on the verge of an unprecedented feat of winning the quadruple.

With nine games remaining of the season, Everton’s top-flight stay looks far from certain, especially after their dramatic loss to relegation rivals Burnley on Wednesday night.

And speaking on Breakfast ahead of the game, former player Leon Osman opened up about the worrying moments at the Merseyside blue half.

Frank Lampard’s men were in a winning position at Turf Moor but came away empty-handed

“The money that Everton have invested, you expect the club to take steps forward,” he said.

“To not find the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, struggling for points, struggling for form, struggling for any type of performance really, so it is a very worrying time for the club.

“I think that’s been a criticism of this team all season, you look around and wonder who the characters are? Who are the leaders?

“You saw the way Alex Iwobi gave the ball away [in the defeat to West Ham] just as they got back into the game, and Everton, defensively, are so exposed.

Even January signings like Dele Alli haven’t had much of an impact

“You are already behind in games so you wonder who has the character to get on the ball and try to shake things up.

“And for the majority of this season it has fallen on the shoulders of young Anthony Gordon, which is incredible to say for a guy who has just broken into the team, very young in age, very young in career. [and he’s] carried the fight of such a big club of such a story of characters.

It was those points that made Osman fearful of a loss to Burnley given Manchester United are next, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal yet to play against Everton.

“That’s the big deal. [the run in] because Everton have been better at home under Frank Lampard, they have lost six of eight Premier League games under him, but both wins have come at home.

“But then you play against Manchester United, Leicester, Chelsea, Brentford and Palace who are not given because of their form compared to Everton.

Osman made 433 appearances for the club and helped make his side a tough team for anyone in the league to play against

“I think if Everton are to stay on their feet they need to find a bit more [than] they showed, I think they have to eliminate the defensive mistakes, they have to get Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score again.

“If they continue like they do in this way, they will undoubtedly go down, and there is no doubt that Burnley and Watford will win two or three games by the end of the season, so Everton have to do that too. .”

Following the loss to Sean Dyche’s side at Turf Moor, former defender Alan Stubbs revealed his fears for his beloved club.

“As an Everton fan it’s desperate to watch the team at the moment,” he told talkSPORT.

“[Burnley] was a game we couldn’t lose and after putting themselves in a really good position they did what they’ve been doing all season and they were able to throw it away.

“It’s just not good enough, I don’t like to criticize former players, but there are so many problems with Everton at the moment.

Richarlison perfectly sums up how every Everton fan feels

“The players aren’t good enough, they don’t show enough fight, enough heart, enough hunger, enough desire, to look like they’re going to get out of this mess.”

Stubbs has explained that a change of dugout is not the answer, with Lampard only replacing Rafa Benitez who was sacked in January.

“I’m not changing managers, we’ve done that too many times, and look where it takes us, that’s not the answer,” he continued.

“It’s the players, the responsibility has to stop with the players, 100%, you cross the white line, you have the duty and the desire to be the best you can be.

“Not hiding, not shirking challenges, not bowing your head and running away from adversity is sticking your chest out and doing something, and the players haven’t done that.

“We can watch the game last night and you can tell the defense is horrible, but the defense also starts from the front.

“There are too many who don’t, you look at the third goal [against Burnley]this is from someone who has a shot at the edge of our box.

“How many players do you see breaking their necks to come back?

“Yes, there is a mistake in the right-back position, and then there is a mistake in [Ben] Godfrey for the purpose, but there are so many things people can help [to clear the ball away].”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has revealed he told his players at half-time that it doesn’t look like Everton want to win, which is worrying given what’s to come, with the next visit from United.
