Everton ‘are not afraid’ of Manchester United, insists Alex Iwobi who is calling on Frank Lampard’s struggling side to prove they are not ‘League players’ as they enter relegation battle the Premier League

Alex Iwobi insists Everton have nothing to fear as they face the fight of their life to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

A 3-2 loss to Burnley on Wednesday night saw the club firmly clinging to the basement battle, with Frank Lampard’s side currently just a point above the drop zone.

Iwobi will have a big role to play in Everton’s battle to avoid a drop

The Toffees face a tough series of fixtures, starting with this weekend’s home clash against Manchester United, a game exclusively live on talkSPORT on Saturday lunchtime.

While a clash with United will be seen as a huge challenge for the struggling Merseysiders, Iwobi is quietly confident his side can deliver a result.

He told talkSPORT: “I feel like we respect every opponent we face. We have different tactics for every team, but we don’t go into any game with the slightest bit of fear.

“We have a game plan and we try to stick to it. I’m sure we’ll find something for United.

“We were able to get results the last two times we played against them, even away at Old Trafford.

“At home, I hope we will be able to do something and get a result.”

While the team’s results have been lackluster – four wins and eight losses in the new manager’s 12 games – Iwobi believes working under Lampard has been a fruitful process.

The former Arsenal man took the opportunity to learn from the midfield legend.

Iwobi said: “He gave me that confidence to express myself, even though I played in several positions.

“He helped me so much in training and in games too.

“Right now I’m playing in midfield as a number eight and that’s a position he used to play, so he tries to help and I’m doing well so far.

The Toffees are now just one point above the drop zone with tough games to come

As Iwobi enjoys life under the Chelsea icon, it’s clear there’s only one goal between now and the end of the season.

Everton have just nine games to salvage their season and, according to the 25-year-old, the challenge for Lampard’s side is to prove they are capable of fighting in the top flight in the future.

Iwobi explained: “Teams around us, like Burnley, are pushing and putting pressure on us and that makes it a bit difficult, but you can’t see it that way.

With critical clash with Man United ahead, Iwobi still feeling optimistic

“We must continue. We have nine games to play and there is a maximum of 27 points we can get. We will try to win every game, it’s not easy, but we have to go game by game.

“From what I see in practices and spells in matches, we know we have the quality, it’s just staying consistent.

“As players, we are not championship players. We feel we have enough quality to stand. We just have to prove it to ourselves and prove it to the fans and we’ll be fine, but it starts this Saturday.
