The European Commission will begin consultations with representatives of EU countries on an upcoming sanctions package within days, four EU diplomats told POLITICO.
Brussels has already implemented several sanctions plans against Russia for its war with Ukraine. The European Commission is currently preparing further measures and will discuss the proposals with EU ambassadors as soon as Friday, diplomats said.
Diplomats expect a discussion on a plan to cap the price of Russian oil, currently under discussion in the G7. The United States is pressuring the EU to make progress on capping oil prices before an EU ban on Russian oil imports takes effect in December.
Other potential measures on the table could be more lists of individuals, a ban on imports of Russian diamonds and other luxury goods.
