Eric Adams spends coldest winter night in shelter after migrants refuse to leave hotel

New York Mayor Eric Adams slept at a migrant facility in Brooklyn on the coldest night of 2023 to promote the new housing option after some migrants recently refused to leave a hotel.
“Spent the coldest night of the year at the Brooklyn cruise terminal with ‘Homeless Hero’ & attorney Shams DaBaron & @AMEddieGibbs,” Adams posted on Twitter Saturday. “Our brothers are kept warm and the team that works here gives new meaning to the words ‘love your neighbour’.”
The mayor’s post included video and photos of him at the facility, including showing him sleeping on a cot, dining with migrants and playing video games.
Adams said he chose the coldest night of 2023, when there was a minimum of 12 degrees in the city, to drop by the facility to show how warm and welcoming it is.

“What we have seen is what we have seen since this crisis began, individuals who are grateful to the greatest city in the world for giving them the opportunity to work towards the realization of the American dream. t’s clear that the facilities at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal provide the same services to asylum seekers as all other humanitarian centers in the city, and the terminal team gives new meaning to the words ‘love your neighbor,” Adams said, WABC reported.

Late last month, a group of migrants who were staying for free at the Watson Hotel in Midtown Manhattan refused to leave the hotel – and even protested by sleeping rough – after city officials said that would be staying at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Some of the migrants left the hotel for the Brooklyn migrant center, while others refused to leave and gathered outside the building alongside migrant activists.
Adams said at the time that housing in Brooklyn was hospitable, despite claims that there was a lack of heating and sanitary space in the facility.

“This weekend, we began the process of moving single adult males from the Watson Hotel to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, as we transform the hotel to meet the large number of asylum-seeking families with children” , Adams said in a statement at the time.
“More than 42,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York since last spring, and we continue to exceed our moral obligations by providing asylum seekers with shelter, food, health care, education and a host of other services,” the mayor continued. .

Adams has since pleaded with the White House for more government assistance as the migrant population grows.
“I have a Republican governor dumping my city,” Adams said last month. “I have a Democratic governor getting rid of my city. This is where the national government should have stepped in and said, ‘Wait a minute, let’s coordinate this effort.'”

Adams traveled to El Paso, Texas last month to visit the US-Mexico border and called the influx of migrants a “national crisis”.
