  • Elon Musk says he’s getting into politics to stop the “Waking Mind Virus” from destroying civilization.

  • He responded to a question on Twitter explaining why he was focusing on politics and not Mars.

  • Musk’s comments came following a report into a 2018 sexual misconduct complaint against the billionaire.

Elon Musk said on Twitter on Thursday that he was becoming politically active to stop “the waking mind virus” from stopping humanity from reaching Mars.

Musk made the remarks while responding to questions from a Twitter user about a previous tweet from the billionaire. On Wednesday, Musk posted on the platform saying the “political attacks” against him would “escalate dramatically in the months to come”.

“Just curious…what is your motivation for becoming politically active? Why make yourself a target?” twitter user asked. “You are trying to bring humanity to Mars and alert the public to the danger of AI. Why sabotage these laudable goals by wading through political controversy? Is it worth it?”

In response, Musk wrote“If not stopped, the Awakened Mind Virus will destroy civilization and humanity will never reach Mars.”

Over the past month, Musk has mentioned the “Waking Mind Virus” several times. Wednesday he called Yale “the epicenter of the Woke Mind Virus trying to destroy civilization.”

And in April, Musk used the term in a Tweeterstating that it “makes Netflix unwatchable”.

Although Musk hasn’t described what he thinks is the “woke mind virus,” the word “woke” has been co-opted and weaponized by right-wing figures to mock progressive causes.

Musk also slammed the Democratic Party in a tweet on Wednesday, calling it a “party of division and hate.” In the same tweet, he doubled down on his resolve to vote Republican this election — days after he first stated that position at a tech conference.

Musk’s comments on Thursday came following an explosive Insider article detailing how his aerospace company, SpaceX, paid a flight attendant $250,000 to settle a sexual misconduct complaint against the billionaire.
