Draw New York and attracted to it
| News Today | Usa news
This is my third year illustrating for the Metropolitan Diary, and I have done almost 1,000 designs for the column so far (about half unpublished). That’s a lot of paper and grease pencils.
I certainly have my favorites, and there was a lot to add to the list this year: the Astoria Pool (a New York landmark I didn’t know about before); a cat on a leash (my own cat’s leash walk is in progress); a praying mantis on a bus (New York is known for its people, but animals, even insects, also play a role in city life); Lois Lowry, a teenager living on Governors Island (this made me nostalgic for the books I read as a child); and an artist drawing someone on the train (very relevant!).
It’s just to name a few. Some subjects – taxis, bodegas, metro – are more common in the Journal objects I draw, but I never feel like I’m repeating anything. Each little story has its own unique quality and each one helps me discover and feel connected to New York.
