And the iconic shirt he wore that day is now on sale

He described his first quarter-final goal, where the ball clearly hit his hand, as “a bit with Maradona’s head, and a bit with the hand of God”.

He then scored what was voted ‘Goal of the Century’, dribbling past a crowd of England players before scoring as Argentina sealed a 2-1 win to win the tournament.

Midfielder Steve Hodge had swapped shirts with his rival in the tunnel after the game and has owned them ever since – but it will now go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in a dedicated auction open from April 20.

The former Three Lions man said: “I have been the proud owner of this item for over 35 years, ever since Diego and I swapped shirts in the tunnel after the famous game.

“It was an absolute privilege to have played against one of the greatest and most magnificent footballers of all time.

“It has also been a pleasure to share it with the public over the past 20 years at the National Football Museum, where it has been displayed.

“The ‘Hand of God’ shirt has deep cultural significance to the world of football, the people of Argentina and the people of England, and I’m sure the new owner will be extremely proud to own the most iconic football shirt in the world. ”

The current record for any shirt worn during a game is held by a baseball jersey worn by New York Yankees star Babe Ruth, which sold for $5.6 million at an auction in 2019.
