‘#DeSaster’ Memes Flood Web After DeSantis Campaign Launch

The internet hasn’t been kind to Ron DeSantis after his 2024 presidential campaign launch struggled with technical outages Wednesday night.

The governor of Florida made his presidential bid on the app in a virtual boardroom co-hosted by Twitter CEO Elon Musk. After more than 20 minutes of technical difficulties, Musk restarted the event. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden were also quick to tease DeSantis’ launch. Trump roasted DeSantis by posting snippets of his Mar-a-Lago campaign ad peppered with applause and chants of support interspersed with glitch snippets and deafening comments and echoes that were the first 20 minutes of the launch by DeSantis. Biden was much more succinct, tweeting a simple “This link works” with his presidential campaign donations page.

Some high-profile Republicans supported DeSantis. Conservative political commentator Tomi Lahren called DeSantis’ kickoff “refreshing,” and former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis tweeted a series of positive messages regarding DeSantis’ kickoff.

Musk blamed his massive Twitter following of more than 140 million followers and the hype surrounding DeSantis’ expected announcement as the reason for the problems. He ended the Twitter Spaces event by offering the platform to other presidential candidates if they wanted to use it.
