Denzel Washington addressed the Will Smith Oscar controversy on Saturday, saying, “Who are we to condemn?”

Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday after making a joke about by Jada Pinkett Smith bald head, referencing “GI Jane”. Pinkett Smith battled alopecia.

Washington made the comments during the TD Jakes Leadership Summit, according to The Wrap, and said he prayed with Smith alongside Tyler Perry. He did not comment on what was said between the three.

He also said that “the devil took hold of him that night”.

Washington’s comments come a day after Smith announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts on Friday.

In a statement obtained by Fox News Digital, Smith said he “betrayed the Academy’s trust.”

“I have responded directly to the Academy’s Notice of Disciplinary Hearing and will fully accept all consequences of my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable.
