Delhi Airport Customs on Wednesday arrested a Liberian man at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) with 5.85 kg of cocaine. This is the largest seizure made at an airport in India.
A senior customs official said the accused first flew from Los Angeles to Doha and then flew to New Delhi. Suspected, the accused was intercepted by customs officers at IGI airport.
“Subsequently, during a thorough check of his luggage, certain materials were found secreted in the cavities of a silver-colored trolley bag. Eight packets of off-white and white-colored substances suspected of being narcotics were recovered. This material was field tested for drugs and at first glance appeared to contain cocaine,” the customs officer said.
The recovered cocaine has an international market value of Rs 89.74 crore.
In the past six months, Customs at Delhi Airport seized 33.70 kg of heroin and 12.60 kg of cocaine at IGI airport. For the whole of 2021-22, 35 cases were recorded by customs at IGI airport, with an estimated drug trade value of Rs. 887.35 crores. 34 passengers were also arrested in the process.
