DC school bus driver charged with impaired driving after allegedly crashing into ditch, injuring 9 students

A DC school bus driver has been charged with drunk driving after police say he crashed into a ditch, injuring nine children returning from a field trip.

Troy Reynolds, 48, was driving students and adults from Cox Farms in Centreville, Va., to Murch Elementary School in DC when he went off the road, Fairfax County Police in Va. A press release.

The bus – carrying 44 children and four adults – hit a rock, causing the rim to flex and the tire to flatten.

“Reynolds continued driving until the adults on the bus convinced him to follow a second bus, which was also returning to the school after the field trip,” police said. “The two buses stopped in a parking lot at.”

Police and firefighters were called to the parking lot and treated nine children for minor injuries, the news release said. Reynolds failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the adult detention center. It was reportedly discovered that he had a blood alcohol level of 0.20, above the legal limit of 0.08 in Virginia.

DC Public Schools Chancellor Lewis Ferebee said they are taking the incident “very seriously” and will be “extensively reviewing our transportation providers to ensure student safety is always a priority.”

Police said during an investigation that they learned Reynolds’ license had been revoked in Virginia after a previous DWI and that he had been suspended in Maryland. He was also carrying a fake medical card, Fairfax County Police said.

The agency’s Motor Carrier Safety also found 18 safety violations between Reynolds and the other child-carrying bus driver during the trip.

“MCS determined that none of the bus drivers were properly licensed to operate a school bus,” authorities said.

The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In addition to a drunk driving charge, he faces charges of commercial DWI with child endangerment, as well as rude, gratuitous or reckless care of a child.

Reynolds, of Maryland, is being held without bail. It is unclear whether he has obtained a lawyer.
