DC Area Forecast: Torrential rain but welcome today

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: A mid-range 5 for those who hate and those who celebrate today’s rainy state.

  • Today: Rainy, windy. Peaks: 48-55.
  • This evening: Rain ending late. Lowest: 45-55.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny, windy. Highs: 55-63.

A vigorous low pressure system moving through the Ohio Valley along a cold front is causing a significant soak in the mid-Atlantic today. This produces the necessary 1 to 2 inches of rain late this evening. The dreary weather clears up Wednesday and also creates a sunny and seasonable Thanksgiving Day.

The calm weather is expected to continue through Black Friday, but the weekend could see some increase in cloud cover, cooler weather and perhaps a period of rain.

Today (Tuesday): The rain is developing this morning from the southwest to the northeast. Rain may be moderate to heavy at times this afternoon until late evening, so allow extra time for travel. Highs range from the upper 40s in northwest areas to the mid 50s southeast of the Beltway. East winds gusting 5 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 to 35 mph, add a chill. Trust: medium-high

This evening: The rain continues throughout the evening and ends late at night. The weather is generally cloudy and windy after the rain stops. Winds are from the south then southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 25 mph at times. Trust: medium-high

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Windy weather persists with a mix of clouds and sunshine. Highs range from the mid 50s to 60s. Winds are from the northwest between 10 and 20 mph with gusts as high as 25 to 30 mph at times. Trust: medium-high

Tomorrow evening: The weather is partly to mostly cloudy and still windy with lows ranging from the lower 30s in the outer suburbs to the lower to mid 40s in the city. Trust: medium-high

Thanksgiving Thursday should ultimately see mostly sunny skies with highs a few degrees near 55. There may still be a bit of breezy weather but overall it’s a pretty typical late November day. Thursday night is mostly clear with lows ranging from the lower 30s to the lower 40s. Trust: high

Friday The weather looks mostly sunny in the morning, but we could change to partly cloudy weather in the afternoon as high temperatures range from near 50 in our cooler suburbs to the mid 50s in the city. Friday night is also partly cloudy, with lows extending into the 30s. Confidence: Average

The final weekend November is cooler to colder than normal. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the 40s to near 50. After lows in the 30s to 40s, Sunday is expected to be slightly milder with temperatures likely above 50 in most areas. A southward developing low could bring a period of rain, but the timing is uncertain and models have backed off to some extent on this possibility. Trust: Low-Medium
