Danger! Contestant Martha Bath returned to the show on Wednesday September 21, 50 years after her victory in 1972. The retired CPA told host Ken Jennings: “Fifty years ago this spring I was on the original daytime show with Art Fleming in New York.” She won $40 and a set of encyclopedias (which she still has).
Going into Final Jeopardy, the veteran competitor was trailing behind. She doubled her winnings with the question: ‘Perhaps the most famous photo of him was taken in New Jersey in 1951 as he was teased by the paparazzi on his 72nd birthday’ – making her a show champion.
Bath replied “Who is Einstein?”, turning his score from $15,400 to $30,800. This put him ahead of former champion Emmett Stanton and Christopher Pennant. “It’s much more than a set of encyclopedias,” Jennings said.
Viewers celebrated Bath’s full loop moment on social media. A fan tweeted“Congratulations Martha! Redemption 50 years later! Not only were you BRIGHT, but you looked RADIANT as you completed your speedy trip around the sun!
Another one wrote, “Sad to see Emmett leaving Jeopardy so soon but Martha Bath is so wholesome and really well played. Good for her!”
Bath returned for the following episode (September 22) and fell behind in the final match. While she and her competitors, Michael Menkhus and Lynda Tsuboi all answered the final question correctly: “In 2011, Leland, Mississippi, where Jim Henson grew up, honored Henson and his puppets by renaming a bridge, also a song title,” Menkhus bet the more money and won with the answer “What is Rainbow Connection?”
“I was very fond of Martha and would have liked to see her more. The fact that she’s been on Jeopardy twice in her life tells me that this set of encyclopedias has paid off,” a fan wrote on Reddit.
Another added: “I’m not going to lie, and I really mean no disrespect to Michael, but I was VERY disappointed to see Martha lose.”
Even Menkhus weighed in on the wire, writing, “Martha and Lynda are both wonderful competitors and people, and I’m so glad I got the chance to face them. I’ll probably come back to this comment once I’ve had a chance to review everything, but in the meantime, enjoy the episode!
