Daily migrants crossing the Channel to UK set to break record

Around 1,000 people are believed to have crossed the Channel on Thursday in small boats to reach the UK from France
Lifeboat crews and border force boats were busy until late in the evening after spending hours intercepting boats throughout the day, when the weather conditions were relatively calm and mild for the period of the year.
Thursday’s total, which is expected to be finalized later on Friday, will surpass the previous one-day high of 853 set earlier this month, according to UK news agency PA.
Britain’s Home Office has yet to confirm precise figures for the day, but said Thursday’s figure was “unacceptable”.
In 2019, the Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, promised to make migrant crossings an “infrequent phenomenon” by spring 2020, then pledged in August last year to “return this unsustainable route “.
Meanwhile, the British government has agreed to pay France millions of pounds to increase security on its north coast.
According to PA, around 23,000 people have reached the UK in small boats this year, nearly triple the 8,417 the news agency recorded in 2020.
