DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Crews from West Texas and out of state traveled to North Texas on Thursday evening, Oct. 28 to help Oncor Electric restore power.

Tens of thousands of power outages made a very busy day.

When Nahira Gomez started to see the wind pick up this morning, she got worried.

“The main thing I thought about was the trees breaking and damaging my car,” she said.

Then her apartment in North Dallas lost power and her mind immediately returned to last February.

“I have flashbacks to the winter storm and I’m Puerto Rican, so when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico too, without electricity we can’t do anything at home,” she said.

“There is no power in the whole street, so I’m pretty sure everyone is frustrated right now,” her neighbor said.

“We’re working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power, but it’s about starting and stopping the job,” said Oncor spokesperson Grant Cruise.

When the winds pick up, Oncor’s crews sometimes have to take a break when the going gets dangerous. And in some cases, they are also faced with flying debris.

“A few days ago we had significant rainfall in our area so the ground got soggy,” Cruise said.

“Even if the wind doesn’t completely push a tree, it can push it just far enough to make contact with our equipment.

He said repair times vary depending on the severity of the problem.

“If a tree falls and lowers a line, it can be a pretty quick fix,” he said. “If a tree falls on a pole and knocks it over and crushes a transformer, that’s a bigger repair”

When the wind drops, the crews will really be able to work a lot faster.
