the Boxing Day Ashes Test is also underway at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The match got off to a delayed and chaotic start after Channel 7, the host broadcaster, reported that the MCG press box had a confirmed case of Covid-19.
A statement from the broadcaster reads: “The Seven Network confirms its response after a member of staff working on the Ashes show at MCG tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday evening.
“The staff member was asymptomatic at the time of the test and has self-isolated since the time the positive result was returned.
“Seven activates its Covid measures to ensure the health and safety of all staff, as well as the community at large, and works in accordance with all relevant guidelines and regulations. We work closely with the operations team at MCG and Cricket Australia. “

The ECB also released a statement about a family member on tour in England who tested positive.
Cricket Australia then released a statement confirming four cases (so far) during the England tour following rapid antigen testing this morning.

Just to recap Australian Covid news: three people died in New South Wales – and the Sydney Morning Herald reports that a man died with the Omicron stump. This is Omicron’s first death in New South Wales.
NSW registered 6,324 new cases, there were 35 in Tasmania, and 784 in Queensland, where children aged 5 to 11 can now be vaccinated.
Three other people died in Victoria, and there were 1,999 new cases. Stay tuned for more developments.

Over 1,000 additional US flights canceled
U.S. airlines canceled nearly 1,200 flights on Sunday as crews remain on the ground amid an increase in Covid-19 infections, causing misery for thousands of Christmas travelers.
Commercial airlines had canceled 1,171 flights within, to or from the United States by mid-afternoon, according to a tally posted on flight tracking website FlightAware.com and as reported by Reuters.

It was a third day in a row of travel pain and more cancellations were likely as Covid infections skyrocket, driven by the highly transmissible variant Omicron.
A total of 997 flights were deleted on Christmas Day and nearly 700 on Christmas Eve. Thousands more have been delayed.

Let’s start with the news that american airlines have canceled more than 1,000 flights while crews remain on the ground and forced into self-quarantine amid the surge in Covid-19 infections.
FlightAware.com flight tracking website recorded 656 canceled flights to or from the United States on Sunday. It comes after nearly 1,000 were canceled on Christmas Day and nearly 700 on Christmas Eve.
Meanwhile, Covid cases continue to rise to record highs in Australia. The most populous state in the country NSW recorded three deaths and 6,324 new cases while Victoria recorded three deaths and 1,999 new cases.
However, vaccination rates may offer some comfort with 92% of Victorians aged 12 and over fully vaccinated and 93.5% of those aged 16 and over in NSW having received at least two vaccines.
Europe:
New restrictions are introduced in Wales, Scotland and North Ireland.
New Covid measures in England could be in place until the end of March, including a ban on socializing with another household indoors and a return to the Six-Party Rule outdoors.
Coronavirus vaccination teams could go door-to-door in the UK to reach those who have not yet received their vaccine, reports have suggested.
France recorded a record 104,611 Covid-19 infections over the weekend, surpassing the 100,000 threshold for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
Germany has also recorded 10,100 cases of Covid.
Italy reported a third consecutive record number of Covid-19 cases on Christmas Day.
The Omicron variant has become the dominant strain in Portugal.
United States:
More than 1,000 flights were immobilized in the United States on Sunday.
Asia:

In South Korea, three members of K-pop sensation BTS test tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from the United States. They are all fully vaccinated.

the Palestinian The health ministry said on Sunday it had identified the first case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the Gaza strip.
A Israeli The hospital will begin administering a fourth Covid-19 vaccine to 150 staff on Monday as part of a trial to assess whether a second booster is needed nationwide.
Israel ordered 100,000 units of the Covid-19 Paxlovid antiviral pill from Pfizer Inc for people aged 12 and older at risk of serious illness.
the Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, began self-isolating at home after her daughter tested positive for Covid.
Iran has banned the entry of travelers from Britain, France, Denmark and Norway for 15 days as part of the fight against coronaviruses.
