Conor McGregor could have lost $100m on Floyd Mayweather’s wages as the Irishman forgot his bag 45 minutes before the fight

It’s been nine years since Conor McGregor first stepped into the UFC octagon and what followed has been nothing short of amazing.

Notorious’ icing on the cake came with a crossover clash with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2017, although just 45 minutes before the fight disaster struck and he wasn’t even sure he could fight.

Conor McGregor started to panic after realizing he left his gear bag at home

The former two-weight UFC champion, who at this point had his hands bandaged and was starting to warm up backstage, panicked when he realized he had forgotten something. He had left his gear bag, protective cup and mouth guard at his Las Vegas home and needed someone from his team to pick up the essentials.

McGregor’s wondrous misadventure was captured on video and fans got to watch the MMA star and Mayweather rush to save the fight less than an hour before the start.

“Get someone home to get my bullshit,” McGregor was heard saying. “The equipment bag too. Equipment bag too. My gear bag should be ready, okay? But then, the jock strap. I don’t know where that jockstrap is.

When McGregor’s mistake was announced to Team Mayweather, “Money” sprang into action. The seasoned pro apparently expected some game savvy from “Mystic Mac” and had a spare protective cup just in case.

“They say McGregor forgot his cup,” Mayweather said in his locker room.

“Tell him he doesn’t have to worry, I’ve got a mug for him,” he said. “I brought extra because I knew he was going to say that shit. I brought him an extra cup.

He then walked down the hall to where McGregor and his team were preparing.

“There you go,” Mayweather added. “I’ll give him one, he can have that.” Here is. Where is he? Can I go over there and give him one?

Mayweather naturally wasn’t allowed to go too far into his opponent’s locker room moments before their fight and his cut was ultimately not needed as McGregor’s entourage returned with their gear in time.

In the ring, the boxing legend was of course way above the MMA fighter, who was making his professional boxing debut. McGregor was allowed to tire before Mayweather picked up the pace to claim his 50th victory by TKO in the tenth round.

McGregor has enjoyed great success outside of fighting since facing Mayweather in 2017.

The 33-year-old has built an empire off the money he raked in for that fight and in 2021 he topped Forbes’ annual list of richest athletes.

In the UFC he struggled for form and won one of his last four fights. McGregor is currently on his way back to full fitness after sustaining a fractured tibia and fibula at UFC 264 in July 2021.

Mayweather retired from fighting following his victory over McGregor, but has laced up the gloves a few times since then for lucrative exhibition fights.

Surprisingly this week though, Mayweather came out and said he intends to set up a rematch with McGregor in 2023.

At the moment, the Irishman has replied that he’s ‘not interested’, but if he changes his mind, it’s a safe bet he’ll remember his kit for a second time.
