An elderly woman in China has reunited with her long-lost daughter after approaching a street cleaner to ask for directions.

Hu Jun, 46, was working in Langzhong, Sichuan province, earlier this month when a woman approached her to ask for directions.

The woman turned out to be Cai Youxiu, 78, Hu’s mother who she lost contact with after leaving her hometown of Yunyang County in 1999 to find work in another province.

Cai was looking for his daughter, and with police helpshe was able to determine that Hu was in Langzhong.

Local authorities reportedly planned to bring the two together, if not for their accidental meeting the day before their scheduled reunion.

“I was cleaning in front of a school entrance when an old lady came to ask for directions, and I immediately recognized that she was my mother,” Hu said. The cover. “I was so excited, but she didn’t recognize me even after I called her ‘Mom’.”

Although she was not immediately convinced, Cai eventually believed Hu after the police confirmed that she was really his daughter.

Cai’s unexpected reunion with Hu became a trending topic on Chinese social media, with the hashtag “elderly asks for directions and meets daughter missing for 24 years” generating more than 34 million views on Weibo.

Several social media users found the story amazing, with many comparing it to the plot of a movie or a novel. Hu, however, received criticism online from many users for not putting more effort into finding his family.

According to Hu, she had lost a piece of paper with her family’s phone number. She later found out that her family had been forced to leave their old home due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, so she completely lost contact with them.

“I tried to send letters to them, but they were all sent back to me because the old address was invalid,” Hu said. “I wasted too much time with my mother. I swear to spend as much time as possible with her now.”
