China accuses White House of lying about Biden evoking genocide, forced labor with Xi

China’s Foreign Ministry has denied a White House claim that President Biden brought up “genocide” and “forced labor” during a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Thursday that the president had raised ethical concerns about forced labor and ethnic genocide in China.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has completely denied the alleged conversation, saying: “According to the White House press secretary, ‘genocide’ and ‘forced labor’ were discussed during last night’s call between the Chinese and American presidents. This is misinformation.”

A similar message was sent separately in which the Foreign Office called the alleged conversation “pure lies” and “false information”.

“Pure lies,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lijian Zhao said of the White House claim. “The White House spokesman said the issues of genocide and forced labor were mentioned in last night’s call, that is false information.”

China has been accused of wrongfully imprisoning up to 3 million Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region, as well as performing forced sterilizations and abortions. Chinese authorities say the camps in the area are “re-education” facilities fighting Islamic extremism.

Biden signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act in December, bipartisan legislation that prevents the importation of goods made by forced labor into the Xinjiang region.

Biden held his longest call with Xi on Thursday morning amid tensions between the two world powers.

According to a Chinese reading of the call, Xi warned Biden against defying Beijing’s will on Taiwan.

The call — the fifth between Biden and Xi since Biden took office — began at 8:33 a.m. ET and lasted two hours and 17 minutes, the White House said.

Chinese government officials recently asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, to cancel a planned trip to Taiwan, saying it was a betrayal of Sino-American foreign policy Agreements.

“The call was part of the Biden administration’s efforts to maintain and deepen the lines of communication between the United States and the PRC and responsibly manage our differences and work together where our interests align,” said the White House about the call afterwards. “The call follows the two leaders’ conversation on March 18 and a series of conversations between high-level U.S. and PRC officials.
