In what is probably the strangest of countless eerie scenes at a Donald Trump rally, the former president lamented the awful chaos of these times on Saturday as supporters held up a finger in an airborne salute reminiscent of the “heil Hitler”.
Trump ticked off his imaginary list of current horrors in a kind of dirge with music playing in the background.
Several supporters, some with their heads bowed, stood quietly in the audience with a single finger raised above their heads. Some viewers speculated that he was referring to the nationalist slogan “America first”, while others claimed it was a symbol of QAnon, which Trump is increasingly embracing. Some in the audience were using a modified white supremacist “OK” hate sign with only the index finger outstretched.
Aaron Rupar, a reporter who publishes excerpts of Trump’s speeches, called the scene “one of the weirdest things I’ve seen at a Trump rally, all that’s missing is… is to go around Kool-Aid right after.”
When Trump first became president, he was shockingly greeted with the Hitler gesture by members of the far-right National Policy Institute. The organization’s chairman, Richard Spencer, shouted, “Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!” Trump was not at the scene.
