An off-duty policeman has been charged with a felony after allegedly opening fire on a group of suspected car thieves accused of stealing his SUV on Saturday in the Chicago area, according to reports.
Oneta Sampson Carney, a 58-year-old sergeant, has been charged with recklessly discharging a firearm following the incident at Evergreen Park, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, said a bond offer, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. She was sentenced to $ 5,000 bail at a court hearing on Sunday.
Sampson Carney and her husband were loading groceries into his 2016 Toyota 4Runner in the parking lot of a Sam’s Club store around 6:45 p.m. Saturday when three men approached, according to the Sun-Times.

While two of the suspects asked the couple if they needed help, a third entered the vehicle – which was still driving – and drove away, prosecutors said. When the driver slowed down to pick up another accomplice, Sampson Carney allegedly fired a 9mm handgun once, hitting the ground behind the vehicle, according to the newspaper.
No one was injured, prosecutors said. Sampson Carney called 911 but did not report that she had discharged her gun until police arrived at the scene, they said.
Prosecutors noted that children were in the parking lot when the shooting occurred and another vehicle was driving in the same driveway, The Sun-Times reported.
