Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech has not been recalled by Morocco for his Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
The Atlas Lions will try to win the tournament in Cameroon without one of their best stars as their exile continues.
The 28-year-old missed his country’s last six 2022 World Cup qualifiers and has not been selected since July, when he played a friendly against Burkina Faso.
Playmaker and manager Vahid Halilhodzic has been locked in ranks with the coach unhappy with the professionalism shown by his player.
When Ziyech was excluded from Halilhodzic’s squad in September and told the New Arab: “His behavior in the last two matches, especially the last one, was not that of a national team player who, as a team leader, must be a positive role model. .
“He arrived late and after that he even refused to work. There was no point in discussing it after the fact, as a coach the answer is here to see.
“For me, the national team is above everything, no one can take it hostage.”
On another occasion he said: “For the first time in my coaching career I saw a national team player who does not want to train and claims to be injured, although tests have shown that he could play.
“I will not tolerate it. Not this behavior as long as I coach Morocco.
Ziyech then posted on Instagram saying, “Next time you speak, TELL THE TRUTH THEN…!”
Ziyech also missed CAN 2017 after falling out with manager Hervé Renard.
His absence will be a boost for Chelsea who have suffered from injuries in recent weeks.
Morocco, however, can call on Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi, Wolves center-back Romain Saiss, Watford duo Adam Masina and Imran Louza, and QPR midfielder Ilias Chair.
