Chelsea are ready to pay £85m to sign Wesley Fofana to bolster defense after Marc Cucurella transfer, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Frenkie de Jong have linked up

Chelsea are determined to add Wesley Fofana to their new defense and could be ready to pay £85million for the Leicester man.

Reports have the Blues submitted a bid on Friday, with journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming it is worth ‘over £70m’, however, he notes Leicester insist the 21-year-old is not not to sell.

Fofana, 21, would certainly fit the bill at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are keen to strengthen their backline, having signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £60m and this latest rumor saw ‘£70m for Fofana trend’, while Gary Neville tweeted his surprise at the fee reported.

The young Frenchman has been at Chelsea since 2020 when he moved from Saint-Etienne.

His manager, Brendan Rodgers, has spoken about him, saying he could be one of the best in the world.

“When he said that, obviously it adds extra pressure, but that has to be any player’s goal,” he told the Telegraph. “I not only want to win trophies, but try to be the best defender in my position in the world.”

And despite the rejection of the initial proposal, The Guardian claims that Chelsea believe £85million will be enough to land Fofana.

This would take Thomas Tuchel’s squad spending to over £200million, having also signed Gabriel Slonina, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, as has his Barcelona team-mate Frenkie de Jong.

The club haven’t done much on exits, with Romelu Lukaku being loaned out to Inter, despite earning a fee of around £7million. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left on free transfers and Levi Colwill moved to Brighton on loan, although Armando Broja has been linked with a £30million move to West Ham.
