Charlie Crist’s running mate insults students with special needs

Karla Hernández-Mas, Rep. Charlie Crist’s (D-FL) running mate in the Florida gubernatorial race, recently insulted students with special needs, saying her experience as a special needs teacher will help her make facing the “dysfunctional legislature” if elected.

Hernández-Mats made the remark Tuesday at a campaign event in Cape Coral, bragging about her background as a special education teacher before making the unseemly comparison.

“I’m a teacher. I’m an sp-ed teacher, so my major was education for the emotionally disabled, okay?” she said. “That in itself qualifies me to deal with the dysfunctional legislature.”

“[It’s] a unique set of, um, you know, skill set to deal with it,” she continued, prompting a response from Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis.

‘Sickened by the callous words of someone claiming to be an advocate for children. Karla, saying kids with unique abilities are ‘dysfunctional’ and equating them with political opponents is a new low,” DeSantis said.

“I will make it a point to let all parents know the ‘hate in your heart,’” she promised, echoing the language used by Crist to describe the governor’s supporters, as the Democrat said the last month that they had a huge “hate” in their hearts:

This is far from the first controversial statement from Crist’s running mate. In October 2021, for example, she insulted worried parents attending school board meetings, essentially comparing them to horror movie characters:

His divisive rhetoric matches that of Crist, who last month asked DeSantis supporters not to vote for him because he says they apparently have “hate” in their hearts. He then praised President Biden for having the “courage” to attack MAGA Republicans in a speech.

“God loves him. God loves him, and I love him,” Crist said of Biden. “And he said it directly. Democracy is at stake. … Our freedoms are at stake. And the president explained it, and he couldn’t hold back and I’m so proud of him for that.
