Cesar Azpilicueta sends strong message to Liverpool as Chelsea aim for Carabao Cup revenge in FA Cup final at Wembley

Cesar Azpilicueta will be hoping to use Chelsea’s Carabao Cup disappointment as fuel when they face Liverpool in the FA Cup final.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have already faced the Reds in a showpiece event this season, in a game which saw them miss out on the trophy after losing 11-10 on penalties at Wembley.

With the Blues out of contention in the Premier League and Europe, the FA Cup final is their last chance to win another trophy before the campaign is over.

The west London side have enjoyed a decent 12 months by anyone’s standards, with winning the Champions League last season giving them the chance to lift the European Super Cup and Club World Cup, that they both succeeded.

But ahead of the game at Wembley – a clash which will be shown live on talkSPORT – Azpilicueta is determined to see his side prevail against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Speaking to Tony Cascarino for Weekend Sport Breakfast, he said: “When you lose you want to come back and have the chance to win.

“It’s true that it’s the same opposition, it’s still Liverpool and when you get to the final there are two teams and you want to be on the winning side. You want to win it.

“It doesn’t matter who you play against, you want to get your hands on the trophy.

Chelsea have already won the Club World Cup this year, but their captain wants more

“In the Coupe de la Ligue final we were close and we lost on penalties, but now we have the chance to win so we’ll make the most of it.”

Despite already having two trophies in the cabinet, Azpilicueta says they are determined to emerge victorious to set the tone for what they hope will be an improved campaign next season.

He said: “We are looking at each other and we want to win the FA Cup. It’s true that we won the European Super Cup, the Club World Cup for the first time in our history and now we have the chance to be in the FA Cup final.

“Of course, finishing the season with three trophies and a place in the Champions League would be good.

“We wanted more because when you win the Champions League you want to keep your trophy because the experience we had was amazing and we wanted to repeat it, but unfortunately we couldn’t make it happen.

“In the Premier League, we’ve been top of the table for a while, but we haven’t been consistent enough to keep it and we’re disappointed with this team.

“Next season we will work to get closer to both competitions because I think we have the potential to do so.”

Cesar Azpilicueta’s full interview will be broadcast live on Weekend Sports Breakfast, with full coverage of the FA Cup final from Wembley also live on talkSPORT with a build-up from 1pm.
