MPs said John Scott, a 64-year-old Lakeland resident, was arrested while driving Thursday evening after a witness said he was driving recklessly.

“Most people understand, they know that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a bad thing,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. “But this guy clearly doesn’t understand. The witness who called to report the reckless driver and then helped MPs locate him may have saved lives tonight.

Scott was found driving a white Chevy pickup truck with its high beams on and failing to stay in its lane, MPs said.

According to an arrest report, a deputy arrested Scott and found that “his speech was muddled, his eyes bloodshot and glassy, and a strong smell of liquor coming from his breath and from himself.”

The deputy also reported that he must have caught Scott three times because he would start to fall backwards.

MPs said Scott was so unsteady on his feet that he was unable to complete two of the three parts of their field field sobriety test.

Scott told the assistant he left work around 5:30 pm and went to a friend’s house to drink, where he “had only had six beers.”

Scott’s driving license restrictions only allow him to drive to work, MPs said.

Scott was arrested at that time for drunk driving and transported to the sheriff’s treatment center.

Officials said Scott had become belligerent with the facility assistant and refused to provide a breath sample.

According to a report, he told the MP, “I don’t do anything you say,” and called the MP a derogatory racist word.

Scott was charged with DUI 4th or later offense, refusal to take the DUI BAL test and violation of driving license restrictions.

MPs said Scott’s previous four drunk driving arrests in Polk County took place in 1976, 1978, 1981 and 2000.
