Everyone has their own memories and references around carnations. The carnation is one of the emblematic flowers of our grandmothers’ gardens. He is also in spite of himself at the center of all the dramas in John of Florette and Manon des Sourcesgathered under the title Water from the Hills by Marcel Pagnol.
The carnation is above all an excellent garden plant, very fragrant, faithful to the post every year, which loves the sun and is very resistant to drought.
The foliage is evergreen and therefore forms little gray cushions all year round on the edge of a bed or in a rockery, for example. Amélie Tura loves the carnations she grows in her Atelier du Végétal nursery in the Dordogne, starting with the Grenoble carnation (Dianthus gratianopolitanus).
“It is a medium-sized carnation, around 15 cm. It is very floriferous and really very fragrant. It can be planted on the edge or in the rockery, it is perfect!”
“The Grenoble carnation is small, very compact, very cute!”Amélie Tura, nurseryman
Sweet carnation (Dianthus plumarius) needs a lot of sun, and it does wonders both in the rockery and in the border. It does not exceed 25 cm in height. Carthusian carnation (Dianthus carthusianorum) is a bit taller and fits very well in wild gardens
“I really like this carnation from the Chartreux. It has large stems (up to 1 m high), blooms in roses. It is interesting to install at the bottom of the bed. Plant it with verbenas from Buenos Aires (Verbena bonariensis). He flowers in the spring and she in the summer.”
“Try the carnation of the Chartreux in the flower meadows. It reseeds and naturalizes easily.”Amelie Tura
Consider trimming your carnations to keep them shaped, compact, and pretty to look at. At the start of winter, with shears or pruning shears, cut 5 cm above the first leaves. By cutting them very short, you will encourage the plants to produce shoots, and therefore new stems on the sides but also in the center.
On the planting side, all you have to do is choose the color of the flowers. In the language of flowers, the white carnation symbolizes love and fidelity, the pink carnation maternal love, and the red passion!
