Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for the first six games of the 2022 regular season on Monday, but his case is far from over.

Wednesday, the The NFL has announced it is appealing Independent Disciplinary Officer Sue L. Robinson’s decision, meaning there’s a chance Watson’s suspension could be lengthened or shortened.

The league is reportedly seeking a one-year suspension, while a potential lawsuit challenging the appeal raises the possibility that Watson will be on the field sooner.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters he was preparing for anything, preparing his quarterbacks for different scenarios.

“We’re going to let this play out, but we have to get Deshaun ready to play,” Stefanski said ahead of Day 8 of Browns training camp. according to Cleveland.com. “He hasn’t played football for a year. We have to prepare Jacoby (Brissett) to play. He will potentially play early for us and start, and we will rely on him.

Brissett, who is the presumptive Week 1 starter, has started in 37 games over six years with three different organizations.

“Since I’ve been in this league, he’s been the next man,” Brissett said Tuesday, according to NFL.com. “That was the case in my rookie year, so that experience not only helps playing, but also understanding that you have to be ready whenever your number is called.”

The Browns are set to open their preseason schedule against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 12, and Stefanski said there’s a chance fans could see Watson on the court.

“These pre-season games will be an opportunity to play when it’s a frame of play and the defense can come after you and you’re really in a game,” he said. “I think it will be really more when you get closer to getting reps, than say in practice.
