Brookfield Zoo in Chicago welcomes baby South American tapir

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) – The Brookfield Zoo has welcomed a young South American tapir, zoo officials announced this week.

Mum, Sorghum, 11, gave birth to the 20-pound baby on Sunday.

In case you were wondering what exactly a tapir is, it is a pachyderm closely related to the horse and rhinoceros, according to zoo officials.

Baby tapirs are born with white stripes, however, they will start to fade in a few months and disappear completely after six months.

The unnamed calf should reach full size at around 18 months of age.

The public will be able to see mom and baby at the zoo starting Thursday, zoo officials said.
