Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City Predictions

A party atmosphere is to be expected at Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.

Both groups of supporters have something to celebrate. Manchester City won the Premier League title last weekend, while Brighton have just qualified for the Europa League – their first foray into continental competition.

City have won their fifth championship in the past six years without kicking a ball. Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday handed the award to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Brighton did the job on their own terms. A 3-1 triumph over Southampton took them three points clear of Aston Villa.

These two sides will meet on Sunday, but Brighton’s far superior goal difference means it would take a miracle for Unai Emery’s men to move them to sixth place.

City’s season is not over yet. They will face Manchester United and Inter respectively in the FA Cup and Champions League final next month.

Brighton’s run is almost over, but there is an outside chance they can still overtake Liverpool in fifth.

Even if they don’t, it’s been a great season for the Seagulls. They lost their manager in September but barely skipped a beat, Roberto De Zerbi taking the squad he inherited from Graham Potter to another level.

Needless to say, City were also very impressive. Guardiola’s side have had a few stutters along the way, but they’ve been virtually flawless in recent months.

With all that in mind, it promises to be an entertaining encounter at the Amex.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City Predictions

Manchester City can extend their winning streak to 13 games against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Manchester City winner – 4/5 (Spreadex)

There is no doubt that Manchester City changed the Premier League during the Guardiola era.

They not only influenced the style of play we see in the English top flight, but they also redefined what it takes to be crowned champions.

Arsenal ultimately failed in this year’s title race. But they can still reach 84 points – a tally that would have won them the award in each of the first seven Premier League seasons (if we use points per game to compare the current campaign to those with 42 games).

Yet even Arsenal’s best season since the 2003/04 Invincibles was not enough for Mikel Arteta’s men to keep pace with the City juggernaut.

Guardiola’s side claimed the title after a 12-game winning streak. They took 43 points from the last 45 available. It’s an astonishing level of consistency in what is often considered the toughest league in Europe.

Brighton are among the toughest opponents in the division, but even they will struggle to stop the champions in this revamped game.

Even if City name a weakened side, as they did in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea, they can pick up 13 rebound wins here.

Over 3.5 goals – 5/4 (Spreadex)

Brighton and Manchester City don’t have identical styles of play, but De Zerbi and Guardiola certainly share some similarities as managers.

They are the two teams with the highest average possession in the Premier League this season. They also rank first (Brighton) and second (City) in shots per game and shots on target per game.

De Zerbi and Guardiola are attack-minded managers. That, added to the fact that the pressure is low for both teams, means we should be treated to an exciting game on the south coast.

Compared to other teams in the division, Brighton have been better on the road than on their home turf in 2022/23. They are fourth in the table away from home but only ninth at home.

Yet few teams score more goals in front of their own fans than the Seagulls. Only City, Arsenal and Liverpool have averaged more per game at home.

City, for their part, have put the ball in the net 61 times in their last 25 outings in all competitions.

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest this will be a game full of goals.

Julian Alvarez will score anytime – 10/13 (Spreadex)

What a season it’s been for Julian Alvarez.

A World Cup winner this winter – and the striker finished as the tournament’s third top scorer in Qatar – Alvarez could now claim a treble at club level.

The Argentina international picked up the winner against Chelsea last time out and that should be enough for him to retain his place in the midweek XI.

Whether he’s playing for Erling Haaland or behind him, Alvarez will cause Brighton all sorts of problems.

The 23-year-old has technical ability, physical drive and tactical intelligence. It’s a deadly combination for any attacking player.

“With Julian, every time he plays he gives us everything. He got the assist for the penalty and after [he] made the extraordinary goal. Having two forwards is an incredible weapon,” Guardiola said after the recent 2-1 win over Fulham.
