Boris Johnson has warned double-vaccinated Britons against possible Covid complacency, saying waning immunity over time means booster shots are vital for continued protection.
The PM, however, insisted there was no need yet for the government’s so-called Plan B, which would reimpose restrictions such as mask-wearing and working from home, despite data showing infections. in England at levels last seen at the height of the second wave in January.
“We are monitoring the numbers every day,” Johnson told reporters ahead of the G20 summit in Rome, which he is attending ahead of next week’s Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow.
“Yes, it’s true that the cases are high, but they are not currently any reason to go to Plan B. I think it is agreed between absolutely everyone, except maybe the Labor Party. So we stick to the plan.
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Friday estimated that around one in 50 people in England had Covid during the week ending October 22, the highest level since late December and early January.
