Paul Parker has advised Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour to get out of loan at Norwich if possible.

The Scotland international moved to Carrow Road on a one-season loan, but it didn’t go as planned with Norwich languishing at the bottom of the Premier League.

The situation looks dire for Norwich, who have just ten points in 19 Premier League appearances this season

And it looks like the Canaries’ loyalists are turning on Gilmour, with some fans chanting ‘f *** off back to Chelsea’ in the stands during their 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Parker believes the 20-year-old should be looking to exit as early as possible for the sake of his development and wondered why he went to Norwich in the first place.

“I didn’t hear it [the chants] but I’m sure Billy would have heard it, ”Parker told talkSPORT.

“If you are him and you are Chelsea, you wonder what he really gains from being there. All he gets is 90 minutes under his belt.

Gilmour has played the full 90 minutes but hasn’t always been in the Canaries squad this season

“He doesn’t need that. Everyone knows how good he is, he’s just at a club that isn’t him. When you see him playing for Scotland, but even more so when he plays for Chelsea, you see how good he was.

“He has so much to do on this team. It’s very, very difficult for him. It’s not just about him, there are a lot of players who drop this football club.

“When Gilmour signed [for Norwich] I thought ‘oh, this is weird.’

“Norwich are a lovely club in much of the country, but when you look at your footballing career and want to take it to that next level, you want to be surrounded by the best players possible. It doesn’t have that in Norwich.

Chelsea return could be better for Gilmour’s development

“Did he have a choice? If there had been any choices, the others would have been better than Norwich.

“It doesn’t do him any good to play there, it could tear him apart.”

Parker also believes Gilmour would be better off returning to Stamford Bridge, adding he would join a manager in Thomas Tuchel, who appears to be more willing to give young players a chance more than many of his predecessors.

He added: “When you see some of the players who are now playing for Chelsea under Tuchel.

“He does something different from most Chelsea managers, he uses everyone in the squad, young players and Billy Gilmour would be there.”
