Biden’s mental form attracts media attention: is it fair?

| Breaking News Updates | World News

Joe Biden is perfectly capable of having lengthy discussions on the details of legislative proposals and knows his stuff.

Joe Biden also turns 79 this week, and occasionally stumbles, loses his place or mutilates his words.

This is hardly shocking from a long-haul Pol who, even in his prime, was a self-proclaimed blundering machine. And of course he lost a step or two.

But I never understood the efforts of some Republicans and conservative pundits to portray the president as a spoiled jerk whose White House is actually run by other people.

Given the country’s growing problems – inflation, supply shortage, border crisis, continued Covid, following the Afghanistan debacle – why wouldn’t it be in the best interests of the opposition to blame the guy at the Mountain peak ?

They could also argue that in addition to Biden’s undeniable victory over infrastructure, he presented himself as a moderate Democrat but is now promoting a Bernie agenda. As the president tries to spend nearly $ 2 trillion more after the bipartisan trillion dollar measure, he can be attacked as a captive of the left wing of the party.

But not as someone who doesn’t know what’s going on.

Politico has now given new mainstream credibility to these is-Biden-senile attacks – in the form of a poll. Which is a sure-fire way of saying hey, we’re just sampling public opinion – except the news agencies are making editorial judgments on which issues to include.

In the survey with Morning Consult, Politico says voters have “growing doubts” about Biden’s health and mental fitness.

Indeed, 48% of those polled say Biden is not “mentally fit” to be president, and 46% say he is. Yet last October, voters believed he was in good shape by a 21-point margin.

On a related issue, 50% disagree that Biden is healthy, while 40% say he is. On this point, I don’t think his regular coughing fits helped.

But here’s the key: 78% of Democrats strongly or somewhat agree that Biden is in good mental shape. And 86% of Republicans – 76% of them strongly – say the president is not in good mental shape. (Disturbing sign for the White House: 47% of independents disagree that he’s in good shape.)

So it’s driven by the same deep partisan divide that we see in almost every poll. Most Democrats give Biden the benefit of the doubt, and most Republicans absolutely don’t.

Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster who worked for Biden, tried to blame the findings from conservative and social media, telling Politico: “They’re campaigning very aggressively about it, and it’s spreading a bit in the big picture. public. Overall, people who believe it’s Trump supporters anyway or they’ve been exposed to the right-wing disinformation machine. “

Who is blamed for everything. But no right-wing “machine” prevented Biden from winning the election or posting approval ratings in the 1950s earlier this year. Republicans and Democrats may well be influenced by consuming media that confirm their views. As it turns out, questions like this are largely an approximation of whether you like and agree with Biden or whether you dislike and distrust him.

But the problem with the issue of fitness is that all Americans can make up their own minds. Unlike analyzing complex issues like climate change or supply chain disruption, people can rely on their own instincts as to whether a political leader is up to the job. It is not a medical diagnosis; it is pure opinion.

And they just don’t see much of Biden other than stopped speeches where he repeats a lot of the same lines (don’t bet against America) and trivia (the day his father lost his job).

He doesn’t engage much with journalists. If he did more, he might change his mind. Even though Anderson Cooper’s questions were sweet, Biden handled CNN’s host and audience very well at a recent town hall, with the requisite stumbles.

So maybe the White House is harboring the impression that the president’s own staff want to limit their public exposure. A poll doesn’t mean Biden has medical issues, but the perception isn’t helpful as he’s trying to get out of a political hole.
