Sauber, currently the Department of Veterans Affairs’ top lawyer, is expected to start in the White House in the coming weeks with the title of “special adviser to the president.”
“Dick is an excellent attorney who brings decades of experience that will be a valuable asset,” Ian Sams, spokesman for the White House attorney, told CNN. “As we have done since the transition, we are ensuring that the White House is prepared for the issues we face or will face in the future, and we have built and continue to build a strong legal team to carry out our work and serve the public and the President.”
The GOP has promised to be aggressive in its investigations of Biden if Republicans regain control of Congress. In April, CNN announced the return of Anita Dunn, one of Biden’s closest advisers, as well as the hiring of Sams for her current position in communications.
The White House has been preparing for months for the possibility of Republicans winning the U.S. House — and possibly the Senate — after the midterms, a source familiar with CNN told CNN.
A White House official told CNN on Saturday that the administration “is not making assumptions about the midterm elections.”
“We expect and prepare for oversight, regardless of which party leads the House and Senate,” the official added.
