Republican Karina Lipsman has slammed Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) for claiming to oppose defunding the police despite his voting record showing otherwise and accepting endorsements and campaign contributions from extreme groups left who support the movement.
Beyer, who is running for re-election in Virginia’s eighth congressional district, said at a campaign forum in August that he was “the opposite of the Defund the Police movement” and that Congress needed to “give more money to the police”. In September, he said again at another forum, “we need to defund the police more…because the idea of defunding the police is crazy.” He added that “every police department” the congressman knows of needs more funding.
“It’s nice that Don Beyer is now saying ‘defund the police’ is a bad catchphrase and conveniently pretending he wants to support the police,” Lipsman exclusively told Breitbart News. “But again, another example of promise made and promise broken by Don Beyer, who co-sponsored and passed a bill in Congress which, according to the government’s own official estimates by the CBO, the bill would cost more than 18,000 police departments across the country “significant sums”.
As Lipsman mentioned, last year Beyer co-sponsored and voted for HR 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, which would “defund the police” at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars each year, enact restrictions on police practices and eliminate protections for law enforcement. Republicans have described the bill as a plan to “defund the police.”
Democrats, in their anti-police voting frenzy last year, wanted to use the bill to eliminate qualified immunity for law enforcement. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) explained that “qualified immunity is an essential part of policing” and that eliminating it “would have a profoundly chilling effect on police officers and limit their ability and will to respond without hesitation to critical incidents.”
An analysis of the bill from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) at the time indicated that the bill would cost more than 18,000 police departments across the country significant sums of money. “More than 18,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide would be impacted by the bill’s requirements,” the CBO said in a letter to leading Congressional Republicans.
“It’s time voters held Don Beyer accountable for the towering pile of receipts showing his broken promises and failed record. If I break my promise to the people of Virginia’s 8th District, I hope they reject me,” Lipsman added.
Beyer was also endorsed by and received campaign contributions from several groups aligned with the desire to defund the police. Beyer is currently backed by Planned Parenthood, which backed his campaign and said in July 2020 that he “supports police fundraising and divestment efforts.”
In the past, Beyer has also been endorsed by the Sierra Club, which said in June 2020 that the organization wanted to add its “voices in support of the demands of the Movement for Black Lives: Defund the police”, and has been approved by NARAL, which in April 2021 said it is “long past time to defund the police”.
On the other hand, Lipsman, who said she “comes back[s] 100% blue” of the time, has been endorsed by the Virginia Police Benevolent Association (VAPBA).
Joseph Wolosyzn, the head of VAPBA, said he hopes the group’s endorsement of Lipsman will help sway voters who will ultimately “respect the strong and effective endorsement of our laws” in upcoming elections. elections.
In August, when Lipsman received the endorsement, she said he was “deeply honoured” and “back[s] blue 100%” of the time. The Republican also indicated that she was “deeply concerned” that “current leadership has allowed a wave of crime to hit Virginia’s 8th District.”
