Benfica v Liverpool LIVE commentary and team news: Jurgen Klopp’s Reds aim for first leg lead in Champions League quarter-final

Liverpool travel to Benfica for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final and it will be live on talkSPORT.

On paper, that looks like a favorable draw for the Reds, but they have yet to come away with a win.

Liverpool lost their last Champions League game against Internazionale but won the draw

The Reds are in sublime form and have won 16 of their last 17 games in all competitions and can still claim the ‘quadruple’.

Their opponents had a longer Champions League campaign than most as they had to play two qualifying rounds and beat Ajax over two legs to draw that tie.

They are currently third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga table, 12 points behind Porto at the top of the table and lost 3-2 to Braga on Friday night.

It will be the 11th meeting between the two teams and the Reds have not won at Benfica since 1984.

One man to watch for Premier League fans is Darwin Nunez – the 22-year-old is one of the hottest young strikers around and could well be in the Premier League next year, with a host of clubs linked.

Benfica v Liverpool: Team News

The big news for Liverpool is that Trent Alexander-Arnold should be fit to make a return to the starting XI.

The England international was on the bench for Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Watford so you’d expect him to play on Tuesday.

But the Reds could be without Naby Keita, who has a minor knee problem, and Harvey Elliott, who missed Saturday’s game.

Klopp also faces a decision over his front three as Luis Diaz has played against Benfica seven times and never lost, while Mo Salah looks boiling.

Sadio Mane will also be eager to start, so Klopp faces a tough choice ahead of the game.

Benfica boss Nelson Verissimo has pretty much a full squad to choose from but Rodrigo Pinho and Adel Taarabt are in doubt after missing out on the loss to Braga.

Swiss international Haris Seferovic returned from injury as a substitute on Friday, so he could play from the start tomorrow night.

Benfica-Liverpool: what has been said?

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “I know people will say we’re the favorites and stuff like that, but that’s already the first mistake you could make.

“We’ve been in the business too long to make these kinds of mistakes.”

Liverpool boss Virgil van Dijk: “We just want to make this a season to remember.

“If you had said that at the start of the season, we would still be in all competitions at this stage, with a full squad. [we’d have taken it].

“We should just take advantage of it, go to Lisbon and give our all. If it’s not enough, we start again next season. The things that are happening at Liverpool should not be taken for granted.
