Beijing castigated on February 5 the American decision to shoot down the Chinese balloon which had been flying over the United States for several days, accusing Washington of “reacting in a clearly excessive manner and of seriously violating international practices”.

“China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and protests against the use of force by the United States,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that Beijing reserves the right to retaliate.

The balloon had flown over North America for several days before being shot down on Feb. 4 by a missile launched from an F-22 fighter jet, Pentagon officials said.

Joe Biden congratulated the pilots who carried out this operation “successfully”. He said he gave the order to shoot down the balloon, but that the Pentagon wanted to wait for “the safest place to do so” in order to avoid any damage to the ground when any debris fell.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin called the operation a “deliberate and lawful action” in response to an “unacceptable violation of [la] sovereignty” of the United States by China.

This case has indeed caused an increase in tensions between Washington and Beijing.

American officials had first revealed that they were tracking an imposing Chinese “surveillance balloon” over the United States.

As a result, the head of diplomacy Anthony Blinken canceled a rare visit to Beijing, which was to help calm relations with China.

Beijing admitted that the “aircraft” was Chinese, but assured that it was a balloon intended to collect meteorological data.

China’s Foreign Ministry said on Feb. 5 that it had “clearly requested the United States to handle the situation properly, calmly, professionally and with restraint.”

Beijing will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the companies involved” in the incident, the ministry added.
