Bayern Munich to extend Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s contract as former Stoke City striker breathes new life into Bundesliga side as Robert Lewandwoski replacement

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is expected to be offered a new contract by Bayern Munich before the end of the season.

The former Stoke and Paris Saint Germain forward launched his career with the current Bundesliga leaders, and his efforts appeared to have landed him a new contract.

Signing a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in October 2020, Choupo-Moting’s current deal expires in June next year.

Now German outlet Sport Bild are reporting that the club want to link the 33-year-old before his contract expires.

Last season, the Cameroon international scored nine goals in 26 appearances and with Sadio Mane joining the club he was set for another year of cameos, despite Robert Lewandowski’s exit.

Fast forward to this season, however, and he hit the ground running, scoring seven appearances in 12 across all competitions – including against Lewandowski’s Barcelona in the Champions League.

He has also scored in his team’s last three league games, as well as two goals.

But despite his form this season, Bild also said the defending Bundesliga champions knew Choupo-Moting would be good this season and backed him to be their first-choice No.9 this summer.

The 33-year-old is in his third season at Bayern

It is understood that Bayern also preferred him over summer target Sasa Kalajdžić, who eventually signed for Wolves.

However, the former Stoke City man would like to take his time with the decision.

Bild suggests the Cameroon star is looking to start negotiations following his return from the World Cup – which starts on November 20.

Choupo-Moting’s form is a far cry from his time with the Potters in their Premier League relegation season in 2017/18, which saw him score five goals in 32 appearances.
