Authorities investigating multiple deaths at Fort Stewart, Georgia

Authorities are investigating several deaths that occurred at Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield on Nov. 15, the base public affairs office said Thursday.

According to a social media post from Fort Stewart, law enforcement from the installation was “on the scene of an incident at an on-post housing unit” around 5:20 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

Kevin Larson, chief of public communications at the public affairs office, said in a statement that there were “deceased individuals” but did not say how many people died, how they died or how the military had been informed of their death. death.

The identities of the deceased will not be released until their next of kin have been notified, Larson said.

Both the Facebook post and Larson said “there is no reason to believe there is a widespread threat to our community.”

The incident remains under investigation by Fort Stewart law enforcement and the Army Criminal Investigation Division. Larson said no additional information would be provided due to the ongoing investigation.

Fort Stewart is about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia, and, at 280,000 acres, is the largest military base east of the Mississippi River. The Third Infantry Division is based outside the fort.
