Aston Villa set to play second-choice goalkeeper against Manchester City despite Liverpool Premier League title run-in as Emi Martinez is reported to be rested

Manchester City would face an Aston Villa side without their first-choice goalkeeper on Sunday as they seek to beat Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently a point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s men, meaning a home win against Villa will see them retain their crown regardless of the Reds’ result against Wolves.

Martinez should be rested for the game against City

There has been a lot of talk about how Villa manager Steven Gerrard will plan to take points from City on the final day in order to help his former side Liverpool win the title.

However, according to Gaston Edul – a TyC Sports reporter in Argentina – Gerrard’s side are set to rest their first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez for the game at the Etihad.

It is claimed that the decision was made in order to welcome Martinez ahead of Argentina’s next match against Italy.

The two nations are due to meet at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

The game has been specially organized as ‘Finalisma’ – a new competition to pit the winners of the last European Championship against the winners of the last Copa America.

Italy claimed glory at Euro 2020 by beating England on penalties in the final and will now return to Wembley for another showpiece match on June 1.

Liverpool fans hope Gerrard and Villa will do them a favor

Argentina, meanwhile, beat Brazil 1-0 to win the 2021 Copa America.

The Finalissima is a revamped version of the Artemio Franchi Cup last held in 1993.

It’s yet to be confirmed which of Villa’s replacement stoppers will feature instead – Viljami Sinisalo or Robin Olsen.

It will no doubt be a blow to Liverpool, who had been hoping a full-strength Villa side could hamper City on the final day.
