‘Asbury Revival’ marathon cult enters 10th day, similar services expand to other college campuses

An evangelistic service in Wilmore, Ky., has been celebrating nonstop for 10 days what many of its attendees call a “revival.”
The event is being held at Asbury University – a small Christian college – and has seen attendees come from all over the country to take part as it enters its tenth consecutive day of worship.
The movement began after students refused to leave after a chapel service last Wednesday, and services have since grown to fill the school chapel with worshipers from across the country, according to christianity today.

The “Asbury Revival”, as it has been called, echoes a widely reported cult event that took place decades ago.
A revival broke out at the same university in 1970 at Hughes Auditorium. The service began inside the campus chapel before more and more students arrived to worship, pray and sing for 144 straight hours.
In Evangelical Protestant Christianity, a “revival” is a sudden and enthusiastic restoration of religious vigor to a church, city, or larger geographic region.

Evangelical Christians view revivals as a reconnection with the divine after a period of spiritual dryness.
Asbury’s revival has cascading effects as congregations elsewhere in the United States join in the cult of the marathon.

Samford’s service, held at Reid Chapel, began as usual before classes on Thursday were canceled due to weather conditions.
Congregants stayed and continued the meeting until it began to be compared to the Asbury event.
“For more than seven hours, the students gathered at Reid [Wednesday] and late into the morning worshiping, praying, sharing testimonies and reading scriptures,” said Kevin Blackwell, executive director of Samford Ministry Training Institute, Alabama Baptist.

He continued, “It was totally organic and student-led. At 2 a.m. there were 150 to 200 students in the chapel seeking the face of God and praying for revival on our campus. God is up to something. !”
