Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli gets a new No.11 shirt number to follow in the footsteps of club legends like Marc Overmars, talkSPORT’s Ray Parlor… and Mesut Ozil

Arsenal have had great players wearing their No.11 – Marc Overmars, Robin van Persie, Mesut Ozil, to name a few.

And now you can add Gabriel Martinelli to that list, after the Brazilian was handed the 11 shirt for the 2022/23 season.

And he’ll wear a new number on his back

The winger, who has worn number 35 since arriving in north London from Ituano in 2019, showed off his new shirt number during the unveiling of Arsenal’s kit for the upcoming season.

As well as Overmars, Van Persie and Ozil, Kevin Campbell, Sylvain Wiltord and talkSPORT’s own Invincible Ray Parlor have worn the 11 shirt.

Most recently, Lucas Torreira wore the number for two seasons, while Martin Odegaard received it while on loan with the Gunners, before his transfer was made permanent at the start of the season and he received the shirt. No. 8.

Martinelli hopes he won’t join the less successful names that have worn the No.11 lately, with Andre Santos and youngster Carlos Vela wearing the shirt for a year.

Van Persie is not the most beloved number 11 the north Londoners have ever had, after leaving for Manchester United

They hope Martinelli doesn’t leave them to join their rivals, or fall completely out of form like Ozil did.

That seems unlikely to be the case after the 20-year-old’s recent performances saw him finish the season with five goals and five assists in the Premier League.

With his current contract expiring in 2024, there have been talks of Arsenal giving him a new long-term contract which would extend his stay in north London.

And if they hand him No.11, there’s something to be said, the reports that he might get a new contract might have some legs.
