Arsenal go straight into the Europa League Round of 16 as Kieran Tierney’s superb goal earns them a 1-0 victory against FC Zurich.
The Gunners left-back did well to head over a bouncing ball before shooting expertly into the corner of the net from the edge of the box in the 17th minute.
It turned out to be the only goal of the clash at the Emirates Stadium, which saw Arsenal miss a number of chances to extend their lead with Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah closing in.
But the Swiss side were a threat throughout and had plenty of chances with Aaron Ramsdale doing well to deny a header from Jonathan Okita in the first half.
After the break, Adria Guerrero was disallowed a goal for a marginal offside, while Bohdan Viunnyk’s left-footed shot whizzed past just past the post.
There was also a rather comical moment earlier in the second half when match winner Tierney lost a large portion of his shirt after being pulled off by Nikola Boranijasevic.
As PSV Eindhoven won 2-1 at Bodo/Glimt, Arsenal needed all three points to secure their place in the round of 16.
They have achieved just that and will avoid the play-off round and possible tie against the likes of Ajax, Barcelona and Juventus, who find themselves in the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League groups.
Manchester United will enter the Europa League play-offs as their 1-0 win at Real Sociedad was not enough to see them top of their group.
