Armie Hammer will not face sexual assault charges in Los Angeles case | Armie Hammer
Actor Armie Hammer will face no charges in the sexual assault case brought against him in 2021.
The Social Network star has been accused of rape and physical abuse by a woman he had an on-and-off relationship with for four years.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue the case after a thorough investigation.
“In this case, these prosecutors conducted an extremely thorough review, but determined that, at this time, there was insufficient evidence to charge Mr. Hammer with a crime,” the office said. “As prosecutors, we have an ethical responsibility to only charge cases that we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt…Due to the complexity of the relationship and the inability to prove forced sex not consensual, we are unable to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The accuser, known as Effie, reported the actor to police in February 2021 after he claimed he raped her in 2017 and abused her on other occasions. “I thought he was going to kill me,” she told a news conference.
Her claims came amid a flurry of other stories implicating Hammer engaging in BDSM activities with other women with accusations of behavior that went too far. Hammer has since admitted that the “power dynamic was off” and that he was acting “an asshole” but the relationship was consensual.
“Everything was discussed beforehand,” he said in an interview with Air Mail. “I have never forced this on someone unexpectedly. Never.”
Her attorney called Effie’s accusations “attention-seeking and misguided.”
In his recent interview, Hammer added, “I had a very intense and extreme lifestyle. I would pick up these women, bring them in – in this whirlwind of travel, sex, drugs and great emotions flying around – and then as soon as I was done I would just drop them off and move on to the next woman, leaving this woman feeling abandoned or used.
He also claimed he was sexually abused by a youth pastor when he was 13, which he says led him to take an interest in BDSM as he felt “helpless” at the time. “I had no agency in the situation,” he said. “My interests then went to: I want to be in control of the situation, sexually.”
Hammer was dropped by his agency and his role opposite Jennifer Lopez in the action comedy Shotgun Wedding was recast. He said he was now “broke” and “massively in debt”.
