Antti Niemi reveals he spoke to talkSPORT’s iconic caller who thought he was Scottish in interview with Southampton

“He has not finished, he is only 28 years old! – one of the best lines ever said live on talkSPORT in our 27 year history.

Now Antti Niemi – who was at the center of that iconic joke – has revealed he actually spoke to the man who made that famous call.

Antti was at the center of one of talkSPORT’s best phone conversations – he’s now revealed the call

Of course, we found out a while ago that the caller who phoned asking why Antti Niemi wasn’t in the Scotland squad, only to be told he was Finnish, was actually joking .

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the hilarious exchange between the caller and former Scottish player Arthur Albiston, it just went down like this…

Caller: I was wondering about the selection of goalkeepers for the Scotland team, and he must know that Hearts have a good team, we have Colin Cameron in the team and Steven Pressley but I don’t know why, during at least three seasons he was ignoring Antti Niemi.

Albiston: Antti Niemi?

Caller: Still! I don’t know why it doesn’t get game?

Albiston: …for Scotland?

Niemi played for Southampton, as well as Fulham and Portsmouth

Caller: Still!

Albiston: … he comes from Finland.

Caller: What is he ?!

Albiston: He is Finnish.

Caller: He has not finished, he is only 28 years old!

Albiston: … not completedhe’s from Finland.

Caller: What do you mean?

The caller – who turned out to be Keith – has since admitted to talkSPORT that he phoned the show with the joke ready to go wild, knowing full well that Niemi was not Scottish.

Niemi smiled as he listened to the call again

Now Niemi himself has revealed he actually spoke to Keith about the incident – and the talkSPORT prankster genuinely apologized for his antics.

When asked in an interview with Southampton if he’s had enough of hearing that call in his life, Niemi replied: “Yeah no I think it’s funny but yeah every year I get people asking, like, you know ‘did you hear about this’ [and I say] ‘Yeah I got it’.”

Then he dropped this bomb.

“And actually when I went to Scotland a few years ago, I went to the Hearts game, and this guy came up to me and said ‘did you hear about that phone call?

Before explaining that he had met the caller

“I was like ‘here we go again, yeah I’ve heard it a million times’. And he said his good friend made that phone call and I wanted to talk to this guy.

“So he called this guy and I recognized the voice on the other end. And the guy said ‘I’m so sorry’ because he had a joke in mind when he called the radio station .

“But he didn’t realize that the host, who was on the other end of the line, didn’t realize he was joking. So he kind of played all the way and he was like ‘I’m so sorry’.

“I said ‘no, I think it’s funny’. So he thought he was making a good joke, but he got serious during that phone call. So that was the story behind it.

The Southampton interviewer was taken aback and asked Niemi: ‘So he didn’t really think you were Scottish?’

“No, no, no,” he replied, “Everyone thinks the guy who called was very serious, but for him it was a joke that went too far.

“That’s what he said anyway!

After the video of Niemi’s reveal was tweeted by the Saints, a number of fans responded in disbelief, clearly wanting to believe the interaction was genuine.

“It’s like finding out Santa doesn’t exist,” wrote one disappointed supporter, while another said, “Choosing not to believe this.”

Meanwhile, one fan replied, “Best joke ever.”
