ntonio Conte described Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Southampton as “a missed opportunity” and lamented his Tottenham side for failing to match the “intensity” of their hosts.

Conte became the first Spurs manager to appear in his first seven league games unbeaten, but was frustrated to share the points with an exhausted Saints, who played the last 50 minutes with ten men following Mohammed Salisu’s red card.

The defender was sent off for a second bookable offense after a clear foul on Heung-min Son in the box and Harry Kane sent in the penalty to cancel James Ward-Prowse’s superb opening goal.

Spurs were aggrieved for refusing two goals in the second half, with Kane being ruled offside by VAR before a scoreline and Matt Doherty penalized for fouling Fraser Forster after the goalkeeper knocked down a cross in its own net.

Conte was nonetheless unhappy with his team’s performance and lost two points, says his leggy players felt the tension in a second game in 48 hours.

“For sure it was an opportunity that we missed,” said Conte. “You try to exploit this situation to try to get three points. We knew very well that playing Southampton at this stadium is not easy.

“A point in the game was positive for us, but I think in the second half we felt tired and our minds were not clear to make the best decisions.

” It can happen. I tried to change something with the submarines. Lucas Moura and [Bryan] Gil [came on], and I decided to change [Sergio] Reguilon because he had a yellow card. I think it was much better that way but we couldn’t find the solution to score. We scored, but at the same time they decided to deny the goal.

“They were very good, they defended very well and finding space was not easy. But at the same time, we can do a lot better and move the ball faster.

“I think playing after two days – 48 hours – is not easy for all teams and I think I have seen a bit of fatigue in my players.
