Andy Ruiz Jr once caught his trainer with an accidental punch and he took it better than Anthony Joshua

Training a heavy weight carries certain risks, including getting punched in the face.

And that’s exactly what happened to Andy Ruiz Jr’s padman during training in 2021.

But somehow he managed to stay up

Video from one session shows Ruiz Jr throwing a combination and, with the final left hook, he misses the pad and grabs his trainer on the chin.

The coach takes it like a champ and as he falters slightly, he manages to stay on his feet, as Ruiz immediately realizes what he’s done and apologizes.

The trainer’s ability to take that punch is made all the more impressive by the fact that even former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua couldn’t keep up with Ruiz Jr’s power.

The pair met in the ring in 2019 and Ruiz Jr was a massive underdog going into the fight and it seemed to go exactly as everyone expected when the Mexican was dropped in the third round.

However, Ruiz Jr immediately rebounded and knocked Joshua down four times before stopping him in the seventh round.

The win made Ruiz Jr the unified WBA, WBO and IBF champion, although it didn’t last long as the pair had a rematch later that year and Joshua reclaimed his titles.

Ruiz Jr stunned the world when he knocked out Joshua in their first fight

As for Ruiz Jr’s next fight, last time out he beat Luis Ortiz by unanimous decision in a WBC eliminator.

About a month later, Deontay Wilder knocked out Robert Helenius with a stunning first-round knockout in his own WBC eliminator.

This meant the WBC then ordered Wilder against Ruiz Jr in a final eliminator for Tyson Fury’s WBC world title.

At the moment, however, the fight is yet to be confirmed as Wilder is considering other options, with his manager, Shelly Finkel, claiming ‘The Bronze Bomber’ wants Joshua next.
